Artist’s Statement

I have, for the past 20 years, studied, drawn and painted for the creative pleasure it gives me. At this stage of my artistic development…and life…I am thankfully able to spend more time and bring more intensity to my work.

Concentrating on oil paint as my medium of choice, I have included still life arrangements and portraits in my work. However, my favored subjects…where my muse has led me…are landscapes, primarily in New Hampshire’s Lakes Region, often including architecture or human forms…with the goal of stirring the emotions of those who truly love this region. Upon reflection, my artistic heritage includes 20th Century painters Edward Hopper and Fairfield Porter, two well known and highly respected artists who were diligent in their efforts to create evocative, satisfying and, at the same time, understandable works of art.

My friend and artistic mentor, David Ratner (1922-2005) once told me, somewhat whimsically, “One good thing about being an artist is that you don’t hurt anyone, and once in a while you’ll do something that will give someone a little pleasure. How can life be better than that?”…words with which I completely agree.
